TECRO offers one-year scholarships to U.S. undergrads and grads to study Chinese in Taiwan
The Cultural Division of the Taipei Economic and Cultural Representative Office (TECRO) in the United States offers one-year scholarships to U.S. undergraduates and graduates to study Chinese at the Mandarin at any of the approved Chinese language centers. Due date: Applications must delivered to the UCLA Center for Chinese Studies (address above) no later than February 7, 2007.
Number of scholarships offered: Ten
Duration of scholarship: Sept. 1 2007 to Aug. 31, 2008
The award cannot be deferred or renewed without final approval from TECRO.
Award benefits: A monthly stipend of NT$25,000. Successful applicants are responsible for their own housing (in Taipei), health insurance, and travel costs.
Closing date for receipt of applications: Applications should be submitted to the Center for Chinese Studies (address above) no later than Friday, February 9, 2006
Notification of the results of the competition: Late April 2007. At that time, recommended candidates will receive a letter from the U.S. Department of Education notifying them that their application is being fowarded to TECRO for final review. Please note that this recommendation by the U.S. Department of Education is only preliminary and does not guarantee receipt of a scholarship. Final notification of schoalrship status will be provided by TECRO directly to candidates sometime in April or May 2007.
ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS
Applicants must be U.S. citizens.
Academic Preparation. Applicants:
- must be full-time undergraduate or graduate students at an institution of higher educastion in the United States with two years of undergraduate study completed by the time the fellowship begins.
- must have a GPA of at least 3.0 on a 4-point scale.
- must provide a written statement that indicates intent to enroll in the U.S. graduate program no later than 2008, if the applicant is scheduled to graduate in 2007.
Note: This scholarship program is not designed to support doctoral dissertation research.
