Declaring International & Area Studies Major
Students can declare one of the International & Area Studies majors - African & Middle Eastern Studies, Asian Studies, European Studies, Latin American Studies- only after they complete all preparation courses with a minimum UC GPA of 2.00.
Completion of level 3 of the foreign language is acceptable when applying for the major. Level 6 of the foreign language is required to complete all preparation requirements, but can be taken once accepted to the major. The minimum prep GPA of 2.00 must be maintained even after this course is completed.
Incoming UCLA Students
Incoming freshmen and transfer students may enter UCLA as an International & Area Studies Pre-Major (pre-African & Middle Eastern Studies, pre-Asian Studies, pre-European Studies, pre-Latin American Studies).
Transfer students interested in an International & Area Studies Program major should complete as many preparation courses prior to coming to UCLA as possible, leaving only I A Std 1 to be taken at UCLA during the Fall Quarter of their Junior Year (unless taken during a prior summer term at UCLA).
If you would like to verify that the courses you have taken are applied to the preparation requirements correctly, please feel free to have your DARS modeled for the particular International & Area Studies IDP major at your College Counseling Unit.
Note: If you have completed any preparation coursework outside of UCLA prior to the application period, you must ensure that this coursework posts to your DARS. Please contact the UCLA Admissions Office if any non-UCLA coursework is still pending.
Students can request declaring the major by clicking on one of the options below. Applications are accepted at the end of each quarter. Applications may be submitted after completing all the preparation courses for the major, finishing at least the elementary level of their primary foreign language, and maintaining a minimum GPA of 2.0 UC. All the grades must be posted before an application may be reviewed.
When you will receive a decision
Students will receive a decision regarding their application during Week 2 of the following quarter in which they applied. Please refrain from inquiring about your application until after the notifications are sent out.
