As of July 1, 2015, several of the Institute's centers will have new directors and associate directors, and the Institute itself will have a new associate vice provost.
UCLA International institute, May 20, 2015 — The UCLA International Institute is pleased to announce a number of leadership changes, both in its senior management team and in its individual centers and programs. It thanks its outgoing leaders for their many contributions and dedicated service and welcomes its new leaders to the Institute “family.”
Gail Kligman, distinguished professor of sociology and capable director of the Center for European and Eurasian Studies (CEES) for the past 10 years, has been named the new Associate Vice Provost (AVP) of International Studies. Kal Raustiala will be stepping down from the AVP position, but will remain both director of the Burkle Center for International Relations and faculty director of the International Education Office.
With the departure of Gail Kligman from CEES, Professor of French and Francophone Studies Laure Murat (http: //www.french.ucla.edu/index.php/people2/faculty?id=15) has been named the new director of the Center for European and Eurasian Studies.
At the African Studies Center (ASC), Steven Nelson, professor of African and African-American art in the Department of Art History, has been named the new director of the center.
Ghislaine Lydon (http: //www.history.ucla.edu/people/faculty/faculty-1/faculty-1?lid=653), associate professor of history and the current chair of the graduate African Studies Academic Program of the Institute, has been named the center’s associate director. Françoise Lionnet, distinguished professor of French and Francophone Studies, will be stepping down from her positions as ASC director and member of the Institute’s Faculty Executive Committee after five years of exemplary service.
Aslı Bâli (https: //law.ucla.edu/faculty/faculty-profiles/asli-u-bali/), associate professor at the UCLA School of Law (http: //law.ucla.edu), will become the new director of the Center for Near Eastern Studies (CNES) in winter quarter 2016. Until that time, Professor of History James Gelvin and Professor of Anthropology and Near Eastern Languages and Cultures Susan Slyomovics — both longtime faculty associates of the center — will serve as interim co-directors of CNES. Gabriel Piterberg, professor of Near Eastern history in the Department of History, has stepped down from his position as director after two years of capably guiding the center.
The UCLA International Institute is also proud to announce that its undergraduate Academic Programs have added a minor in global health. The interdisciplinary course of study is scheduled to commence in fall 2015. Dr. Michael Rodriguez, MPH (http: //people.healthsciences.ucla.edu/institution/personnel?personnel_id=46686), professor of family medicine at the Geffen School of Medicine, director of the UCLA Blum Center on Poverty and Health in Latin America and co-director of the Center of Expertise on Migration and Health, will chair the program.
At the Center for Korean Studies, Associate Professor of Asian Languages and Cultures Namhee Lee will join Professor of History John Duncan as co-director of the center.
And Bonnie Taub — who is on the faculty of both the Fielding School of Public Health and the Department of Anthropology —will fill the new post of associate director at the Latin American Institute (LAI). Taub will continue to co-chair the Institute’s graduate Latin American Studies Program with LAI Director and Professor of History Kevin Terraciano, marking a deeper integration of the program into LAI going forward.
