Topic of discourse

Buddhism exists across Asia as part of local cultures, each one with its own vernacular literatures, sectarian organizations, forms of worship, customs, myths, arts, and sacred geography. At the same time Buddhism exists across Asia as highly evolved system of scriptures, icons, behavioral norms, sacred vocabulary and language that transcend any single locality or cultural area. How, then, has this trans-cultural Buddhism been reconfigured to fit particular places and communities? In what ways has Buddhism re-mapped the places where it exists? What, if anything, can these processes tell us about Buddhism as a religion that replicates and reinvents itself from place to place? This symposium will bring together a group of 18 leading scholars from Japan and North America to examine Buddhism "in place" (the ways that Buddhist discourses interacts with local places) and its relationship to Buddhism "out of place" (the ways that elements from one locality assume new roles as they enable or inhibit developments in other environments). It will foster broad discussion of these issues by scholars from different countries who employ different methodological approaches to study widely different aspects of Buddhism in Japan and in India.
