Tsuchimoto Noriaki Tribute Screening

A tribute screening of "Minamata: The Victims and Their World(1971)" followed by "On the Road: A Document(1964)."

This screening event honors the late Japanese documentary filmmaker and social activist Tsuchimoto Noriaki (1928-2008). Tsuchimoto's "Minamata Series" is known for its powerful screen portrayals of the lives and struggles of the victims of Minamata disease. The series greatly helped to restore human rights for the victims by directing global attention to the corporate and state negligence involved in the industrial pollution of the seawater near Minamata, which was the direct cause of the disease. Tsuchimoto's other important works illuminated marginalized social issues stemming from Japan's postwar economic growth.

We will screen Minamata: The Victims and Their World (1971), Tsuchimoto's first feature film in the Minamata Series, followed by a discusson and On the Road: A Document (1964), one of his early films about endangerment of public safety in the city of Tokyo during the rapid urban development leading up to the Tokyo Olympic.
