Application Process Flowchart

The following ten steps are required to submit an online application. This process will take 15 minutes of your time. Before beginning, please make sure you have available an electronic copy of your Statement of Purpose, Completed Coursework, Research History, Itemized Budget, a valid personal email address, and two names of faculty members who have agreed to write a letter of recommendation and their corresponding email addresses.
After the submission, you can return to your application form using your login ID, and make as many changes as you wish until 11:59pm February 27th, 2009.

Step 1: Create Applicant Profile

  • First Time Users: register for an account
  • Returning Users: students who have applied for 2009-2010 fellowships from other centers at the International Institute may use the same login ID to submit an application

Step 2: Fellowship Selection

  • Indicate which fellowships you feel appropriate for your application

Step 3: Current Status

  • Current Status of Study
    • Date of B.A.
    • Date entered Grad Program
    • Date of M.A.
    • Date adv. to Ph.D. Candidacy

Step 4: Purpose of the Fellowship

  • The title of your project
  • The primary purpose of this fellowship
  • Please have your statement of purpose (600 word maximum) ready to upload

Step 5: Japanese Language Proficiency

  • Aural
  • Oral
  • Reading
  • Writing

Step 6: Completed Coursework

  • List courseworks towards degree completed
  • Have your official transcript sent to the Terasaki Center for Japanese Studies, 11282 Bunche Hall, 148703
  • Please have your coursework description ready to upload

Step 7: Research History

  • Describe research history and list titles of papers
  • Please have your file ready to upload

Step 8: Other Fellowships

  • List all fellowships/scholarships received from the time of entry at UCLA, as well as other fellowships you are applying for this year.
  • If you received any fellowships from the Terasaki Center for the 2008-2009 academic year, please attach a brief report.

Step 9: Itemized Budget

  • Itemized Budget for the Academic Year of 2009-2010
  • Please have a detailed itemized budget ready to upload

Step 10: References

  • The Names and Email addresses of TWO references 
  • After you submit your application, both letter providers will be sent an email instructing them how to submit their letter electronically.
  • Letter providers will have until March 7, 2009 to upload letters.
