Suffering from psychological disorders, Raul spends his days obsessing over his downstairs neighbors, a couple with day-to-day marital problems that seem banal when compared to Raul’s isolation. Monitoring their every movement, he craves the companionship they seem to flaunt, and when he finds the wife home alone, he makes his move. After dragging her upstairs, his absurd and invasive attentions terrorize both man and wife.
Fear is a sweaty, messy endeavor in this feature directorial debut by Giancarlo Ruiz, whose experimental and visceral approach replicates Raul’s increasingly unhinged perspective. The Neighbor artfully plays with the claustrophobia of voyeurism, the terror of captivity and the urgency of a character study where the lead is unreliable and genuinely deranged.
