Summer Language Classes at UCLA for High School Heritage Speakers

NHLRC offers summer language classes for heritage and non-heritage speakers of Amharic, Arabic, Armenian, Chinese, Hindi, Italian, Persian and Russian.

Project Leader: Sumaya Bezrati (UCLA)

The NHLRC offered its first high school class for Russian speakers in 2006 and has expanded its offerings to include Amharic, Arabic, Armenian, Chinese, Hindi, Italian, Persian and Russian. These classes serve several purposes: 1) they offer appropriate instruction for high-school heritage speakers of these languages; 2) they result in the development of a cohort of heritage language instructors, mostly graduate students, who are being trained in teaching techniques and materials and curriculum development; 3) they offer a laboratory for piloting materials, teaching strategies, and assessment.
