ESL requirements

The university requires all students to attain a high degree of English language proficiency. In addition, graduate students must have an advanced level of oral proficiency before they can be hired as teaching assistants.

The Academic English/ ESL program offers many courses for different levels and needs.  You may need to fulfill the UCLA requirements or merely want to hone your academic English skills.  We offer general ESL courses as well as specialized courses in public speaking, writing and composition, pronunciation, and literature especially.

To determine which level of ESL is appropriate for you, you must take the ESL Placement Exam (ESLPE). The results of this exam determine your ESL requirement or exempt you from ESL.

Students who are not native English speakers must pass the Test of Oral Proficiency before they can serve as teaching assistants.
