Lecturer of Portuguese
Part-time Lecturer in Portuguese
Position: The Department of Linguistics at the University of California, San Diego (http://ling.ucsd.edu) invites applications for a part-time lecturer position in Portuguese in our Linguistics Language Program (LLP). The lectureship is at 33% to 100% time, for the full academic year beginning July 1, 2007, and ending June 30, 2008 with possibility of extension. The lecturer will design course syllabi, prepare all course materials (including exams), attend weekly LLP meetings during the academic year and the annual LLP fall workshop prior to the start of classes in September, and be responsible for all instruction and grading in assigned courses.
Qualifications: The successful applicant will be a native or near-native speaker of Portuguese, and have a very good command of English. A native or near-native speaking ability in Brazilian Portuguese is required, as well as excellent skills in standard written Portuguese.
The applicant must have previous language teaching experience, a vocabulary and knowledge of grammar in the language equivalent to that of a university-educated speaker, a deep familiarity with the cultures where the language is spoken, an ability to serve as a model for students by speaking clearly and intelligibly in the classroom, and an ability to function effectively with other instructors in a team situation. Formal training in linguistics and/or language teaching is highly desirable but not required. The candidate must hold at least a B.A. (or equivalent) degree.
