Appendix 3: Survey of the Teaching of Heritage Students

"Heritage Language" students are those who speak a non-English language at home and are to some degree bilingual in that language and English.

  1. What courses do you or your Department offer which are specifically designed to meet heritage language needs? Chinese 1A-2A, 4A-5A, 3R, 6R
  2. How many students typically enroll in those courses?
  3. What procedures/tests do you have for placing students in heritage language courses? (Please specify as fully as possible, e.g., types of assessment, types of skills assessed (oral or written, self-assessment or teacher assessment, etc.)
  4. Do you have any information on the number of heritage language speakers in your Department who are not enrolled in specific courses for heritage language speakers?
  5. Please specify if you have designed any special instruction materials specifically for heritage language students, e.g. reading material, audiovisual material, technological aids such as computer programs, CD-ROM, etc.
  6. What do you think are the major issues/problems related to the teaching/learning/testing of heritage languages?
