Since the 2002 Heritage Institute, UC has adopted guidelines both for heritage language instruction and curriculum. We will discuss both sets of guidelines, the state of affairs in language programs with heritage populations, and our newest collaborative project, an on-line manual for heritage teaching.

Day 1. Saturday, April 30

Teacher Development for Heritage Language Instruction: Beyond L2

12-1:15: lunch break. We will provide box lunches for all registered participants.

1:15-2:30: Kathleen Dillon, Associate Director, UC Consortium on Language Learning and Teaching: A discussion of the 2002 UC instructional guidelines for HL education, followed by an open discussion of heritage work in various UC departments/programs

2:30-2:45: break

2:45-4:15: Presentations of on-line projects for HL instruction:
1) Gyanam Mahajan, Teaching Urdu Script (project funded by the UC Consortium)
2) Linda Jensen, Korean heritage reading project (funded by NEH);
3) Yenna Wu, Developing Suitable Instructional Materials for First-year Mandarin Heritage Students in the UC System (project funded by the UC Consortium)

Recent Work on Teaching Heritage Students in East Asian Languages: What Have We Accomplished So Far and What Should We Do Next?

10:15-10:45: Namhee Lee, Coordinator, UCLA Flagship Program for Professional/Academic Korean, UCLA

Curriculum Design and Teaching Heritage Students to High Proficiency. The Flagship Program is funded by the National Security Education Program and is designed to advance students from a proficiency level of Advanced (2/2+) to Superior (3). Dr. Lee will discuss working with the first cohort of Flagship students at UCLA, all of whom are heritage speakers.

10:45-12:15 Georgiana Galateanu: On-line teacher training manual (created by grant funded by UC Consortium). The manual is a work in progress, and we will preview three sections. We will ask for your feedback, as well as for language-specific content that you believe could be added or you might wish to contribute.
