Counting In Numbers

In his linguistics classes, Schuh uses video footage of people counting from one to ten in the same word families to show relationships between languages. "To me it's very effective. It sort of just hits you in the face that these languages sound alike, but they sound different," he says. For each language family, Schuh took advantage of his own environment to create footage. During his travels, he filmed speakers of related African languages. For his Romance and Asian languages videos, Schuh filmed UCLA students. "On the UCLA campus, you can get just about any language you want," he says.
