UCLA Performance of 'Peony Pavilion' to Come, But Reviews Are In
'Youth Edition' of the Kun opera stops in Berkeley and Irvine, earning plaudits from critics.
On Sept. 29, 2006, a three-evening production of the classic sixteenth-century Chinese Kun opera 'Peony Pavilion' (Mudanting) kicks off at UCLA. Because Los Angeles is the third stop on the production's West Coast tour, theater-goers here and in Santa Barbara have the benefit of verdicts by critics at the Los Angeles Times, San Francisco Chronicle, Orange County Register, and Daily Californian. According to the Sept. 26 Times, this "wondrous work," as adapted by the Taiwanese writer Kenneth Pai, is "richly entertaining with moments of rapturous beauty."
