On his inaugural trip to India as UCLA chancellor, Dr. Gene Block traveled to New Delhi and Mumbai — the heart of Bollywood — in December 2014. During the trip, Chancellor Block was joined by Vice Provost for International Studies Cindy Fan and Director of the Center for India and South Asia Akhil Gupta. Meeting with alumni, parents, supporters, together with leaders in the business, education and government sectors, the delegation explored ways for UCLA to best engage with India.

MUMBAI, INDIA - Alumni and parents met with the delegation during a “UCLA in Mumbai” reception, where they shared their ideas on how UCLA can continue to involve Indian friends and supporters in its activities on campus and abroad. The delegation also met with alum Jehil Thakkar, Partner and Head of Media & Entertainment at KPMG, who offered his perspective and advice on UCLA's engagement with India.

MUMBAI, INDIA – Executive Chairman Kishore Lulla graciously hosted the delegation at the offices of Eros International Media in Mumbai. Lulla, a good friend of UCLA and the School of Theater, Film and Television, shared his recent successes in the Indian film and entertainment industry and introduced the delegation to his team. Opportunities for collaboration in film between UCLA and Eros International Media were discussed.

MUMBAI, INDIA - Chancellor Block and Vice Provost Cindy Fan met with Ratan Tata for a second time, this time in Mumbai. They let Mr. Tata know about the positive internship experience of a UCLA student at Tata Industries in summer 2014 and discussed other ideas for continued partnership, such as the creation of a platform for the discussion of global issues and solutions.

MUMBAI, INDIA - UCLA alumnus and film director, screenwriter and producer Shonali Bose met with Chancellor Block and the delegation in Mumbai. Shonali's recent film "Margarita, With a Straw" won the NETPAC Award for the best Asian film to premiere at the 39th Toronto International Film Festival. Bose introduced the delegation to Bollywood star Aamir Khan, who spoke about the positive impact of his TV show "Satyamev Jayate" in India. Khan aims to inspire social change by connecting emotionally with his audience. His passion and enthusiasm for his work was certainly contagious!

December 2014Shiv Nadar hosts meeting with Chancellor Block

NEW DELHI, INDIA –Shiv Nadar, founder and chairman of HCL Technologies and chairman of the Shiv Nadar Foundation, hosted a meeting with Chancellor Block and the UCLA delegation. The meeting focused on areas of potential collaboration between UCLA and the Shiv Nadar Foundation, whose initiatives include Shiv Nadar University and VidyaGyan, a leadership academy for underprivileged children living in rural areas of India.

NEW DELHI, INDIA - Chancellor Block met with experts and leaders from the education sector, including Sunil Mujal of BML Munjal University, the founders of Ashoka University and faculty and administrators from other top universities in India. Discussions focused on how UCLA can best engage with education institutions as it expands its presence in India.

NEW DELHI, INDIA - In celebration of Dr. Block's inaugural trip to India as chancellor, UCLA hosted alumni, parents and supporters at an intimate evening reception in New Delhi. Technopak CEO Arvind Singhal (UCLA MBA 1982) who played an instrumental role in strategizing the delegation's trip to India and helping it make connections with local education, business and government leaders, addressed an audience of more than 30 at a “UCLA in New Delhi” reception.

NEW DELHI, INDIA – While in Delhi, Chancellor Block and the UCLA delegation met with Dr. Arvind Subramanian, chief economic advisor to the government of India. Dr. Subramanian offered his perspective on the current state of the Indian economy and how UCLA can best engage with the country's education and industry sectors.
