June 2015Delegation Meets with Alumni Yuji Tsutsumi, Tatsuo Okada,Tomohiro Tohyama

An intimate breakfast meeting with Yuji Tsutsumi (UCLA 1965), Tatsuo Okada (UCLA PhD 1982) and Tomohiro Tohyama (UCLA LLM 1884) leaders, of the UCLA Alumni Association in Japan, provided a forum for productive thoughts on how to increase student and faculty exchanges between UCLA and Japanese universities. Just as UCLA students are concerned about life after college, so too are Japanese students who seek to study at UCLA. The alumni leaders, now business leaders themselves, suggested ways to engage with industries that would facilitate the study of Japanese students at UCLA.

June 2015UCLA Signs MOU with Meiji University

UCLA and Meiji University signed a memorandum of understanding on June 25 during the delegation's visit to the Meiji campus. Chancellor Block met with President Fukumiya, where they discussed their universities' hopes for increasing international collaboration and exchange among their respective students and faculty.

June 2015UCLA Delegation Visits Waseda University

In a meeting with the president and senior leasers of Waseda University, the UCLA delegation discussed future opportunities for academic and cultural exchanges. Both universities are committed to international collaboration and to providing their respective campus communities with multidisciplinary and intercultural experiences.

June 2015UCLA Global Forum in Tokyo

Chancellor Gene Block and Vice Provost for International Studies Cindy Fan hosted local Bruins at the UCLA Global Forum and Reception in Tokyo. The evening commenced with a panel discussion focusing on law, business and politics and concluded with a campus update and networking reception.

June 2015Japan Foundation Receives UCLA Delegation in Tokyo

Japan Foundation President Hiroyasu Ando received the UCLA delegation in Tokyo. The Foundation has been very supportive of the Asian American Studies Center at UCLA, which has enabled talented scholars to join the faculty at UCLA. The Global Japan Initiative, an event held annually at UCLA that attracts directors of Japanese Centers from around the world, is also supported by the Foundation. The close collaboration between the Japan Foundation and the Japanese Studies program at UCLA promotes study abroad experiences for Japanese students in the U.S., as well as academic and cultural exchanges.

July 2013Tokyo Reception for UCLA Alumni

On July 7, 2013, Chancellor Block hosted a UCLA reception event for UCLA alumni, current and incoming students, and parents in Tokyo. Numbering more than 920, UCLA alumni in Japan represent the largest group of our international alumni.

July 2013Promoting UCLA-Japan ties in Science and Technology

In Tokyo, Chancellor Block met with Yuichiro Anzai, President of the Japan Society for the Promotion of Science (JSPS), and Yoshinau Mishima, President of Tokyo Institute of Technology (Tokyo Tech) to promote UCLA-Japan ties in science and technology.

July 2013Japanese Minister of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology

Chancellor Block and members of the UCLA delegation met with The Honorable Hakuban Shimomura, Minister of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology for Japan. Chancellor Block and Minister Shimomura discussed student exchange and new programs to increase the number of students who study abroad.
