CEES Funding Opportunities for UCLA Graduate Students

 

Summer Dissertation/Pre-Dissertation Fellowships

CEES awards summer pre-dissertation and dissertation fellowships of up to $5,000 to UCLA graduate students to conduct research abroad in European and/or Eurasian area studies. Applicants will be required to submit a CV, an abstract of their research of no more than 100 words, and a description of the proposed summer research project of no more than two typed pages. This description should include a detailed outline of the research agenda and how the grant would further it. An itemized budget and two letters of recommendation from faculty members are also required. One of the letters of recommendation should be from the student's principal advisor. Priority is given to projects that focus on the 19th, 20th, and 21st centuries; however, all projects of serious academic merit that focus on Europe or Eurasia will be considered. Project descriptions must demonstrate how the project will advance knowledge of European or Eurasian societies, histories, or cultures.

Summer Language Study Grants

CEES awards summer language study grants of up to $3,000 to UCLA graduate students to study a European or Eurasian language as part of their research preparation. Applicants should submit an abstract outlining their research, a summer language study program agenda, an itemized budget, and two letters of recommendation. One of the letters should also evaluate the student’s level of proficiency  in the language to be studied. Priority is given to students whose research focuses on the 19th, 20th, and 21st centuries; however, all projects of serious academic merit that focus on Europe or Eurasia will be considered. Project descriptions must demonstrate how the student's research will advance knowledge of European or Eurasian societies, histories, or cultures.

Conference Travel Funds for Graduate Students

UCLA graduate students who will be presenting conference papers with a European or Eurasian focus may apply to CEES for travel funds if departmental sources have already been exhausted. Students are eligible to receive up to $1,000 in travel funds over the course of two academic years. To apply for travel funds students must provide a documented airfare estimate from an airline, travel website, or UCLA travel, an abstract of the paper, a conference program or other proof that the conference paper has been accepted (maximum 5 pages-edit if necessary), and a short, electronically submitted letter from the student's advisor indicating his or her endorsement of the student's participation in the conference. CEES travel funds may only be used to cover the cost of airfare. They do not cover hotel, conference registration fees, or ground transportation. Proof of payment for the ticket must be submitted at the completion of the trip in order for the reimbursement to be processed. Priority is given to projects that focus on the 19th, 20th and 21st centuries, however, all projects of serious academic merit that focus on Europe or Eurasia will be considered. Application Deadlines: October 15 (for fall conferences), December 2 (for winter conferences) and March 1 (for spring and summer conferences)
