
Academic Year and Summer fellowships for training in modern Latin American languages combined with area studies for UCLA graduate and undergraduate students.
The Latin American Institute administers the federally-funded Foreign Language and Area Studies (FLAS) Fellowship program supporting language training in Quechua, Portuguese, and Advanced Spanish for graduate and undergraduate students at UCLA.
New and continuing UCLA graduate students in all disciplines may apply for the Academic Year and/or the Summer FLAS awards. Undergraduate students must be studying target languages at the intermediate or advanced level (second year or above) to be eligible FLAS awards. Applicants must be U.S. citizens or permanent residents.

Important information about the language evaluation: if you have some knowledge of the language that you are applying to, you need to have a language evaluation at UCLA. The Portuguese language evaluator is Carlos Quicoli (quicoli@humnet.ucla.net) office hours Tuesday & Thursday 11-12 or by appointment. For Quechua, please contact Luz Maria de la Torre. For Spanish, please contact the UCLA Spanish & Portuguese department to coordinate an evaluation with a professor or TA. Only these assessments will be accepted. (AP exams or other certificates are not allowed).
