Two separate groups from Africa, one from South Africa and one from Sudan visited UCLA on Monday, February 1, 2010 to learn more about diversity-related initiatives on college campuses that work towards advancing student learning, and also initiatives that attract students, staff, and faculty from underrepresented groups.
The group from South Africa included five educational professions participating in a State Department sponsored study tour on “Transformation and Diversity in Higher Education” and had a full day of meetings at UCLA. They first met with various members of the Chancellor’s Advisory Group on Diversity (CAGD) to discuss the UCLA Diversity Plan and how various members of the UCLA community including the Academic Senate, faculty, staff, undergraduate students and graduate students contribute to its implementation. They followed it with a meeting with Dr. Charles Alexander, Associate Vice Provost for Student Diversity and Director of the Academic Advancement Program (AAP) and other directors of the program to discuss the AAP program and its contributions to students from underrepresented backgrounds. For the second half of the day the delegation visited representatives from the Intergroup Relations Program to learn about strategies to encourage tolerance and improve intergroup relations. The day was topped off with meetings with Vice Chancellor of the Graduate Division, Claudia Mitchell-Kernan and Vice Provost of International Studies, Nick Entrikin.
The group from Sudan included four individuals, all education professionals, and met with different AAP directors in the afternoon to learn more about affirmative action, diversity, and the impact of historical, racial, and gender discrimination on current education and strategies on how to work toward educational equity.
Both parties enjoyed the visit and received insight of the various initiatives and programs working to improve the diversity of faculty, staff, and students here at the UCLA campus.
