The Atomic Dome in Hiroshima, Japan, is one of the few structures left standing after the first atomic bomb was dropped on a city in 1945 during World War II.

UCLA to Participate in Global Symposium on Bombing of Hiroshima

To take place on campus as well as on the Internet, an hourlong event on Wednesday, August 4, will mark the 65th anniversary of the bombing of Hiroshima and connect UCLA with participants in Japan, Germany, Russia and the United Kingdom.

UCLA faculty, staff and students are invited to watch an hourlong event Wednesday, August 4, to mark the 65th anniversary of the bombing of Hiroshima. The Internet symposium will connect the campus with other participants in Japan, Germany, Russia and the United Kingdom.

The UCLA Terasaki Center for Japanese Studies and the Irvine-based nonprofit organization Live Forum are co-sponsors of the World Peace Pageant 2010, which will be seen on Ustream and at a viewing site in Haines Hall.
 
During the symposium, the mayors of Hiroshima and Nagasaki in Japan; Hanover, Germany; and Volsgogrado in Russia will relay messages of peace and participate with residents of their cities in an online question-and-answer session.
 
The public is invited to attend the 4:15 p.m. telecast of the event on the third floor of Haines Hall, Room 352 (the William A. Lessa Reading Room), or watch it on the Internet.

A 10-minute clip from Live Forum's documentary "No more Hibakusha (A-bomb survivors) 1-2-3...!" and a video of a Hiroshima memorial service in Los Angeles held on August 1 will also be shown.
