Chinese 220A/B: Theoretical Approaches to Chinese and Sinophone Cultures

Fall 2010/Winter 2011

 

Fall 2010:

Screenings:       Mondays, 7:00 – 9:50 pm, Royce 152 (five times during Fall 2010; no screening September 27)

Discussions:      Tuesdays, 2:00 – 4:50 pm, Royce 152 (every week)

Course description:

Introduction to history, theory, and methodology in the study of modern Chinese and Sinophone cultures, with emphasis on literature and cinema. Weekly units organized around periods, places, and themes such as the modern girl, high socialism, postsocialism, colonialism, and nationalism.

 

Grading:

Chinese 220A has In Progress grading only; students are expected to take Chinese 220B in Winter 2011 as well. A research paper (about 20 double-spaced pages or 6,000 words, in English) will be due at the end of 220B. Upon completion of 220B, letter grade and course credit will be issued for both 220A and 220B.
