Topic: Memoirs, historical literature, literary response
Subject: English Language Arts
Duration of Lesson(s): About one week
Grade Level: High School
Rationale: Students will read and respond to the memoir Dreams of Trespass by Fatima Mernissi. This book is a series of vignettes told through the eyes of a girl growing up in a harem in Fez, Morocco. After reading sections of this book, students will be able to describe life in Morocco in the 1940s. Students will be assessed through a writing assignment that includes literary response and analysis. A larger unit should include more chapters of the book and an extended writing assignment.
Lesson Objective: The students will read and respond to Dreams of Trespass by Fatima Mernissi. At the end of this lesson, they will be able to compare and contrast life in Morocco with life in the United States.
