Proposal to make changes to International & Area Studies IDP Minors

Now that the International & Area Studies majors have been updated, it is time to focus on revising the International & Area Studies minors.

Recall that prior to 12 Fall, the International Institute offered the following majors and minors, under seven separate IDPs:

Pre-12F MAJORS

East Asian Studies Major
European Studies Major
Latin American Studies Major
Middle Eastern & North African Studies Major
Southeast Asian Studies Major

Pre-12F MINORS

African Studies Minor
European Studies Minor
Latin American Studies Minor
Middle Eastern & North African Studies Minor
South Asian Studies Minor
Southeast Asian Studies Minor

As of 12 Fall, all undergraduate area studies IDPs have been approved to be consolidated under the new International & Area Studies IDP.  The former East Asian Studies major and Southeast Asian Studies major has been merged into the Asian Studies major, which now includes study of South Asia, as well.  The former Middle Eastern & North African Studies major has been renamed the African & Middle Eastern Studies major, which now includes study of the entire continent of Africa.  The requirements for each major have been greatly modified to regularize the structure across programs, consisting of common preparation requirements-I A Std 1 (Introduction to International & Area Studies), two International Societies & Cultures preps, two  International Politics & Markets preps, an Area-specific course, foreign language-as well as upper division major requirements-two International Societies & Cultures courses, two  International Politics & Markets courses, seven Area-specific courses from across the Humanities & Arts and Social Sciences, and I A Std 191, a capstone senior seminar.  This is shown on the major worksheets for each (see below).

MAJORS

African & Middle Eastern Studies Major
Asian Studies Major
European Studies Major
Latin American Studies Major

What has yet to be done, however, is necessary modification of the International & Area Studies minors.  The goal is to follow the regularized structure of the majors, while focusing on the specific area studies courses.   Each minor will have the same structure: Three preparation courses consisting of I A Std 1 (Introduction to International & Area Studies), an International Societies & Cultures or Area-specific course, and an International Politics & Markets course, and five upper division area studies courses, two from the Humanities & Arts, two from the Social Sciences, and one additional elective from either category.

There are, however, various thoughts on which minors to offer.

MINORS

Proposal #1 (4 minors)

One proposal is to have a one-to-one offering of minors to majors, covering the same regions.

African & Middle Eastern Studies Minor
Asian Studies Minor
European Studies Minor
Latin American Studies Minor

Proposal #2 (7 minors)

Another proposal is to retain the Pre-12F lineup of minors offered (adding one for East Asian Studies), but to still map them to the new requirements:

African Studies Minor
East Asian Studies Minor (to be added)
European Studies Minor
Latin American Studies Minor
Middle Eastern & North African Studies Minor
South Asian Studies Minor
Southeast Asian Studies Minor

Alternatively, we could mix and match between Proposals 1 and 2, by for example breaking out Asian Studies into sub-regional minors, but keep AMES as a single minor, or vice versa.
