FLAS Fellowships

Academic Year FLAS Fellowships

The U.S. Department of Education Foreign Language and Area Studies fellowship program supports training in modern foreign languages and related area studies for undergraduate and graduate students working on Europe and Eurasia. Academic-year graduate awards provide a $15,000 stipend as well as in-state registration fees and tuition. The undergraduate award provides a stipend of $5,000 and up to $10,000 for fees.

The fellowship requires that students take language and area studies courses for a letter grade during the academic year if in residence at UCLA. Currently approved languages for academic year study include, Armenian, Azerbaijani, Catalan, Czech, Dutch, Finnish, French, German, Hungarian, Italian, Polish, Portuguese, Romanian, Russian, Bosnian/ Croatian/ Serbian, Spanish, Swedish, Turkish and Ukrainian. Undergraduate students studying the target language at the intermediate or advanced level (2nd year or above) are eligible for FLAS awards. Undergraduate students studying French, German or Spanish at any level are ineligible for FLAS awards.

To apply for a FLAS fellowship, students must be U.S. citizens or permanent residents. Since the purpose of the program is to enrich the nation’s pool of area and international specialists, applicants must intend to use their training to teach, to serve in government or international agencies, or to engage in private sector or non-profit work that advances American understanding of other countries. Fellowship recipients must be engaged in full-time study for the duration of their awards and must submit reports on the courses they take and the progress they make.
