The Global Fellows Program

The UCLA International Institute brings to campus each year from around the world a class of outstanding scholars near the beginning of their careers.

Structure of the Program

Global Fellows pursue their own research and are expected to produce working papers, journal articles, books, or works in other media during their tenure at UCLA. Fellows are mentored by and meet for seminars with a distinguished and multidisciplinary group of Senior Fellows. These UCLA faculty members include Robert Boyd (Anthropology), Rogers Brubaker (Sociology), Gail Harrison (Public Health—Community Health Services), Michael Heim (Slavic Languages), Edward Leamer (Management, Economics), Naomi Lamoreaux (Economics, History), Francoise Lionnet (French and Francophone Studies, Comparative Literature), Felicity Nussbaum (English), and Ronald Rogowski (Political Science). A small, highly select, and similarly multidisciplinary group of UCLA doctoral candidates are appointed as either Associate Fellows (for students finishing their dissertations) or Global Scholars (for entering PhD students). To supplement presentations by Global Fellows, the Fellowship invites distinguished scholars from inside and outside the University of California for special seminars.

Global Fellows have their own offices, and computer facilities are provided. Program staff assist in finding affordable housing within reasonable distance of the UCLA campus.

Obligations of the Fellowship

Global Fellows’ residency at UCLA is for one academic year. Global Fellows remain in residence, attend seminars, and make at least one formal presentation on the progress of their research. Fellows are also expected to cultivate good working relationships with members of their “home” UCLA academic departments and to interact with the broader UCLA community. Each Global Fellow is expected to contribute to the University’s teaching mission, normally by offering two one-quarter undergraduate or graduate seminars related to their research.

Prerequisites and Selection Criteria

Candidates are considered only if they received, or will receive, their PhDs (or equivalent) prior to the academic year of their appointment. Applicants may be from any discipline, provided that their work is relevant to the concerns of the International Institute. There is no citizenship requirement. Please note that due to the short duration of the appointment, we are unable to sponsor a H1-B visa holder. We are seeking oustanding scholars doing innovative multidisciplinary research on the cultural, economic, social, and political dynamics of the contemporary world. Among topics of particular interest to the Institute are:

  • New forms of governance and coordination, whether in the governmental, non-governmental, or private spheres
  • Security concerns that transcend traditional interstate conflict
  • The causes and consequences of cultural and economic globalization
  • Transnational cultures and multiple identities, and their historical roots
  • Resistance to globalization and to the forms it takes in different contexts
  • Public health, the environment, and economic development

Applications are vetted preliminarily in consultation with the relevant academic department(s) and research centers at UCLA. Final selection is made by a committee composed of the Interim Vice-Provost, the Director, and the Senior Fellows.

Compensation

Global Fellows are appointed as Visiting Assistant Professors. Compensation is contingent on qualifications. Monthly salary is subject to all applicable federal, state, and local taxes. Fringe benefits, including access to UCLA’s health insurance options, are provided for the full academic year.

    • a statement of proposed research (not to exceed 2000 words)
