Ethnomusicologist in residence at UCLA during Fall 2004 and Winter 2005.
Prof. Yoshiko Okazaki, Associate Professor of Ethnomusicology at the University of the Sacred Heart in Tokyo, Japan, is a Visiting Scholar in the UCLA Center for Southeast Asian Studies for Fall 2004 and Winter 2005.
Prof. Okazaki is an alumna of UCLA having completed her Ph.D. in Ethnomusicology here in 1994. Her dissertation was entitled "Music, Identity and Religious Change among the Toba Batak People of North Sumatra [Indonesia]."
During her time at UCLA, Prof. Okazaki will research "Musical Cultures of Southeast Asia and of Southeast Asian Communities in the United States," under the faculty sponsorship of Prof. Helen Rees. She will focus on the adaptation of traditional rhythms, musical styles, and instruments in a new environment.
