TOEFL Program
Program Summary
The following evaluation criteria will be used in judging the abstracts and dissertations:
* scholarly or professional significance to the field of second/foreign language testing and/or test use and development
* originality and creativity
* technical quality
* quality of presentation
Eligibility
To be considered for the 2002-2003 award, a dissertation must have been accepted by the candidate's institution after May 15, 2000. The research must have been completed as part of the requirements for a doctoral degree, or its equivalent, at a university within or outside the United States. Although the dissertation submitted for award consideration must be in English, the research may be related to the second/foreign language testing of any language. Candidates who have submitted abstracts for this award in previous years and employees of ETS are not eligible.
Stipend
The TOEFL program sponsors an annual award of $2,500 for completed doctoral dissertation research that makes a significant and original contribution to knowledge about and/or the use and development of second/foreign language tests and testing.

Applicants must submit the following:
* a ten-page (single-spaced, typed) summary and a 150-word abstract of the research. The summary will include brief descriptions of theoretical background and rationale; purposes of the research; methods (including data analyses); results; and implications of the results.
* with the abstract, each candidate must submit proof of acceptance of the dissertation by the candidate's university.
Under separate cover, the dissertation advisor or director will submit a letter describing the significance of the research.
