Program Summary

The Governor's Teaching Fellowship Program is an important component of Governor Davis' education program (SB 1666). These competitive awards are designed for students preparing to teach in low performing schools in California for four years. The first award recipients were selected in January 2001. UC students did extremely well in the first award cycle.


* Bachelor's degree from a regionally accredited college or university by Sept. 1, 2002.
* Verified academic and employment record (including transcripts and employment history).
* Full-time continuous enrollment in a non-intern teacher preparation program in California by September 1, 2002
*Permanent U.S. residence status - must be eligible to attend college and work in California for five years
* Documented experience in working with children.
* Letters of recommendation and faculty/employer evaluations.
* Interviews with program administrators.
* Four- year commitment to teach in a low performing school (bottom half of the Academic Performance Index).


These fellowships provide $20,000 to help pay education and living expenses while students are enrolled FULL TIME in a California Commission on Teacher Credentialing (CCTC) accredited California State University (CSU), University of California (UC), or independent college/university teacher education program.


May 15, 2001 - applications should be received no later than 5:00 p.m. on this date.

For students beginning full-time enrollment in a teacher preparation program in fall 2002, applications are now available online at: The application form is online but students may visit 1252 Murphy Hall, UCLA if they'd like to view last year's application.

Complete application packets consist of:
*online application
* Official transcripts from all colleges/universities attended
* Verification of admittance to/enrollment in CTCC teacher education program.
* Evaluation/Letters of recommendation must be from three (3) individuals as specified in application.
*Do not send letters of recommendation in place of the recommendation forms
