Advisory for Wednesday-Thursday, May 29-30: Bioterrorism: From Foreign Policy to Local Preparedness

Experts to Discuss Political, Clinical and Practical Issues of "Bioterrorism in the New World Order"

WHAT:  Clinicians, policymakers, technologists, intelligence and law enforcement will gather to discuss "Bioterrorism in the New World Order: Managing a Multifaceted Problem."

WHO:

  • Ken Alibek, distinguished professor of medical microbiology and immunology, George Mason University; president of Advanced Biosystems; former first deputy director of Biopreparat, the Soviet offensive bioweapons program.
  • Bill Patrick, former head of product development of the U.S. offensive biological weapons program.
  • Peter Katona, assistant professor of clinical medicine, UCLA School of Medicine; conference program director of Los Angeles County Bioterrorism Task Forces.
  • Al Zelicoff, senior scientist, Center for National Security and Arms Control, Sandia Laboratories; expert on syndromic surveillance and biological weapons protocol.
  • Zev Yaroslavsky, chairman, Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors, Third District.

WHEN:  8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., May 29-30.

WHERE:  University Synagogue, 11960 Sunset Blvd., Los Angeles.

BACKGROUND:   The conference will focus on the means to prevent and respond to acts of bioterrorism, and on how to manage the competing interests of civil liberties, ethics, cost and security. Discussion will address facilitation of political dialogue, as well as multidisciplinary collaboration between health, policy, technology, and security agencies, particularly in the wake of Sept. 11.

Burkle Center for International Relations; the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department; the Los Angeles County Department of Health Services; and the Los Angeles Terrorism Early Warning Group.
