Heritage Language Preservation

Powerpoint presentation of HERITAGE LANGUAGE PRESERVATION: Chinese as a Model for Inter-Sector Collaboration

Kathryn Paul Email KathrynPaul

Drawing from the original analysis of Brecht & Walton (1993) of the five national language capacity sectors within the United States, this paper will provide an analysis of the historical context within which the Chinese heritage language community has taken the lead to facilitate not merely the preservation, but also the promotion and proliferation, of Chinese language and culture.

Particular attention will be paid to three ongoing projects on regional, national and international levels with pedagogical and even social welfare implications: (1) the AP Chinese Curriculum and Test; (2) various summer professional development joint ventures; and (3) Families with Children from China (FCC) initiatives.
