Gender, Islam and Feminism

Taught by Azza Basarudin, Doctoral Candidate, UCLA Women's Studies Program, this course will explore the intersection of gender, religion and feminism, with a primary focus on the Middle East, North Africa and Southeast Asia.

Using historical, theological, literary and ethnographic texts and films, this course addresses issues such as interpretation of Islamic texts, women's agency and empowerment, feminist activism, dress and modesty, identity and representation, nationalism and sexuality.
