Yuan-ling Chao

Associate Professor at Middle Tennessee State University. Central to her research interests are the history of medicine in China and the comparative study of the history of medicine. Her dissertation, "Medicine and Society in Late Impeial China: A Study of Physicians in Suzhou," explored how medicine in traditional China was closely intertwined with larger society. The practice of medicine, Professor Chao has argued, was shaped as much by social and economic forces as by the internal dynamics of medical practice. Among Professor Chao's current research projects is popular medicine in traditional China. This project examines the role of folk medicine in the maintenance of health among the Chinese as well as the interaction between the folk and elite traditions of medicine. Folk traditions in healing, Professor Chao contends, constantly interacted with the elite tradition, greatly influencing the shaping of traditional medicine in China. Among Professor Chao's publications are "The Ideal Physician in Late Imperial China: The Question of Sanshi" East Asian Science, Technology, and Medicine 17, (2001).
