Course Description
This seminar will examine the practice, theory, and representation of Chinese gardens in their historical, philosophical, artistic, and cultural contexts. We will look at how gardens are presented in paintings, calligraphy, architecture, sculpture, prints, and decorative objects. In addition to exploring the aesthetics of Chinese gardens, we will also consider the social practice of cultural display. In addition, inspiration and re-creation of Chinese gardens from European chinoiserie to the many sites in America will be illuminated in the light of cultural diffusion.
