Gabriel Piterberg awarded Leonard Stein Lectureship
Gabriel “Gabi” Piterberg was awarded the prestigious Leonard Stein Lectureship at Balliol College, University of Oxford. He delivered a series of lectures in April and May on the subject of his forthcoming book, Zionism’s Return: Myths, Politics, and Scholarship (Verso, 2008). The treatise interprets Zionist and Israeli literary and intellectual history, showing that it ought to be understood within the field of comparative settler colonialism and framed in the discourse on land, labor, and political institutions, as well as in terms of literary imagination, biblical mythology, and institutional knowledge. As a scholar and public intellectual committed to reaching a just solution to the Israel-Palestine conflict, Piterberg dedicated the work to the memory of Edward Said. His next project is a comparative study of the literature of decline in the Ottoman Empire and Hapsburg Spain in the 17th century.
