February 12: Burkle Forum -- Can Israel Be A Jewish and Democratic State?

Ruth Gavison, Distinguished Professor of Law, Hebrew University, Leading Israeli Public Intellectual. 4:00 pm, UCLA Law School 1347.

Professor Gavison is a senior fellow at the Israel Democracy Institute and a professor of Human Rights at the Hebrew University in Jerusalem. A member of the Presidium of Moetzet Yahad, a national body concerned with consensus building between religious and secular Jews in Israel, Professor Gavison also holds an advisory board position with Privacy International.

From 1999 through 2001, Professor Gavison was engaged in an intensive dialogue that served to generate a draft covenant between religious and secular Jews in Israel. Awarded the 1997 Zeltner Prize for excellence in research, Professor Gavison became a Laurance Rockefeller Fellow with the Centre for Human Values at Princeton University from 1998 to 1999.
 
A visiting Professor at both Yale Law School from 1978 to 1980, and the USC Law Centre from 1990 to 1992, Professor Gavison was also a founding member of the Israeli Association for Civil Rights in 1974, and served as the organizations' president from 1996 to 1999.
 
Professor Gavison obtained degrees in law, philosophy and economics from Hebrew University and her doctorate in legal philosophy from Oxford.
