Abstract of paper to be presented by Thomas Dichter, international development consultant, at the conference "Islam Re-Observed: Clifford Geertz in Morocco"
Beginning with personal reminiscences of Geertz and fieldwork in Morocco four decades ago, the paper explores the creative tension in Geertz between cultural anthropology (and fieldwork) as "art" and as "science," and the relevance of anthropology (and that tension) for economic development interventions as practiced by development assistance agencies like the World Bank.
