Abstract of paper to be presented by Abdellah Hammoudi, Princeton University, at the conference "Islam Re-Observed: Clifford Geertz in Morocco"
Taking examples from Geertz's ethnographies of Morocco and Indonesia, my paper will analyze the relation between ideal type and thick description, specifically what sort of modification the latter brought to the former. This, I hope will amount to a reappraisal in the light of a close reconsideration of Geertz 's work as well as the work of some of his critics.
