Islam Re-Observed

Abstract of paper to be presented by Lawrence Rosen, Princeton University, at the conference "Islam Re-Observed: Clifford Geertz in Morocco"

How many of the propositions that Clifford Geertz explored in Islam Observed have important implications for the course of Islam in the present. I will mainly be concerned with Morocco, but since I was originally going to work with Cliff in Indonesia and studied the language for several years I will consider some of the Indonesian materials as well.
