2007-2010, UCLA and East China Normal University (ECNU) in Shanghai established an institutional exchange program to promote international collaboration in research and student training.
Funding is available for UCLA faculty and graduate student support to engage in collaborative research and exchange at ECNU. Graduate student exchange will normally be for three to six months, though applications for other periods will be considered. Faculty exchanges will normally last one to four months.
The exchange program's larger purpose is to provide a framework for encouraging exchanges between ECNU and UCLA that are funded from a variety of sources. Faculty and graduate applicants must also apply for all relevant departmental or division funding that is available to support research/study travel abroad.
UCLA faculty are invited to submit proposals for joint research projects in collaboration with a member or members of the ECNU faculty. Successful applicants will receive $500 per month living stipend and $1000 toward travel expenses, as well as housing, office space, and full access to ECNU facilities. Faculty may apply to the ECNU home department to teach one or more courses during the exchange period.
Research should address major historical or contemporary issues, be interdisciplinary, and have relevance to other places and periods. Projects may be expanded in the future to become sponsored collaborative research initiatives, including visiting scholar and graduate student exchanges and workshops.
UCLA graduate students are invited to apply for pre-dissertation fellowships for study at ECNU for a period of up to 12 months. These ECNU pre-dissertation grants are intended to give graduate students whose dissertations will involve work in and on China an opportunity to work with a faculty mentor and take courses in China drawing on the academic and intellectual resources and scholarship offered at one of China's most highly regarded universities. Fellowships include housing, a living stipend of $500, and up to $1000 in travel expenses. Click here for full program and application requirements.
Faculty and Graduate students from ECNU interested in the UCLA exchange program should first apply to the International Exchange Division at ECNU.
Graduate students from ECNU may also attend UCLA through Summer Sessions
UCLA Travel Study Programs hosts a Global Studies summer program for UCLA undergraduate students based at ECNU on "Consequences of the New Market Economy."
