Minor Program

The interdisciplinary program leading to a minor in Latin American Studies allows students to choose from a broad range of course offerings in various departments to develop professional and methodological skills with area expertise. Successful completion of the minor will be indicated on the transcript and diploma.

To enter the minor, students must be in good academic standing (2.0 grade-point average) and have completed 45 units.   All courses must be taken with a letter grade.  Only one independent study 199 course may apply toward upper division requirements and at least three courses (12 units) of upper division credit must be taken in residence at UCLA.

The minor consists of seven courses

• 1 Language requirement: Spanish 25 or Portuguese 25
• 1 Lower Division course: History 8A, 8B, 8C, or LAS 97A
  (These courses must be completed before the minor may be declared.)
• 5 Upper Division courses (20 units) selected from the list of Latin American Studies approved courses with at least two in the social sciences and from the following fields:
  • Social Science (i.e., Anthropology, Economics, History, Political Science, Sociology)
  • Arts and Humanities (i.e., Art History, Ethnomusicology, Folklore, Spanish and Portuguese)
  • Ecology and Environment (i.e., Geography, Public Health/Community Health Sciences)
