Situated on the current academic debate on democracy and human rights in the East Asia region, this project seeks to evaluate the effective capacity of setting up a regional consensus in such issues by analyzing the different diplomatic goals of ASEAN and Korea during the Myanmar crisis in the 1990s.
The project will pursue three main lines of action to reach its objectives: First, it will analyze human rights situation in Myanmar and its consequences for the region. Second, the project will intend to identify the effects of Korean diplomacy in ASEAN since the adoption of its human rights policy in 1998. Thirdly, the project will work on an evaluation of the main opportunities and threats for regional consensus building around human rights and democracy issues within the region.
