MATERIALS:
soft and stiff brushes of various sizes
heavier (80lb.) drawing paper 12x18 or 18x24
mixing plates i.e. styrofoam plates, lids, trays
basic colors of liquid tempera R, O, Y. G.B, V, Black, White
water containers
sponges and/or paper towels
GUIDELINES:
Learn to mix colors using basic color wheel
vary VALUES (by adding white and black) and INTENSITY (brightness) by add a color's complement, opposite on the color wheel
Develop depth & perspective by layering, largest to smallest, atmospheric (duller & lighter in background)
Emphasis on NATURE and BEAUTY; minimize people and manmade objects
Develop a balanced composition with center of interest
Include identifiable elements of Asian culture and geographic features
PROCEDURES:
Look at historic landscape paintings from China, Japan and Korea
Be inspired by photographs of Asian landscapes, gardens, and rural areas
Develop composition and draw out rough draft
Make corrections and make final drawing on "good" paper
Mix colors and paint
Allow one week: This can be done in class and as homework. If paint is put in film cans, students can check them out on loan and work some at home.
