GUIDELINES:
Emphasize negative and positive space
Use a variety of cuts, vary widths and solid and empty space (When using the cutting tools, students will need to think in reverse of sketching; they are taking away instead of adding.)
Original design using elements of Asian culture
Development of center of interest, harmony through repetition and theme, and create interest through variety.
Choose contrasting and complementary color schemes.
Learn to print clean, clear images; learn to creatively title print and label with numbers; learn to produce at least 3 duplicate images.
PROCEDURES:
Trace around size of block to be carved. Suggested size 4"x4"
Design at least 3 ideas, choose your best.
Transfer idea by placing pencil side down onto block and rub on back. This gives the reverse image but it prints the same as the original drawing.
Decide on areas to be cut, empty space, left flat, patterned, and the width & size of cuts. Be sure to emphasize your center of interest by varying technique. Note, even areas that are completely cut away will show the direction of the cuts when inked so consider the direction and repetition of cuts.
Roll out ink on smooth surface, roll brayer over block, turn over and center on paper.
Plate will stick to paper so it can be turned over and rubbed gently over the back.
Remove, allow to dry for 24 hours.
Save all prints. Select the best 3 for mounting and trade with friends with the rest.
HINTS: Do not wash off the block every time. Build up layers of ink and allow the colors to merge for interesting effects. If using multiple colors, do not divide the space in half or equal sections without regard for design. It will distract the viewers attention away from the image.
