Poetry Reading: The Urdu Ghazal in Delhi and Lucknow

Brian Q. Silver, former Associate Professor of Indo-Muslim Studies at Harvard University along with actor Julian Sands will give the poetry reading and analysis.

An introduction to the cultural and social roles of the ghazal, the primary genre of Urdu poetry. Dr. Brian Q. Silver, former Associate Professor of Indo-Muslim Studies at Harvard University, is an internationally recognized expert in Urdu language and literature. He is the author of the forthcoming book, The Noble Science of the Ghazal: The Urdu Poetry of Mirza Ghalib. Julian Sands, well known British actor, collector, and lender to the exhibition, will offer dramatic readings of English versions of the ghazal. This event is held in conjunction with the exhibition India’s Fabled City: The Art of Courtly Lucknow.
