In this talk, Lu will be discussing the aesthetics of Zhang Dai (1597-1689)’s essay collection Taoan mengyi (Dream Recollections of Taoan). She argues that the essays’ famous attention to sensory perception and memory can also be understand as a set of social positions, grounded in the writer’s position as master.

Tina Lu is the Colonel John Trumbull Professor of East Asian Languages and Literatures at Yale University. She received her PhD from Harvard University.
