UCLA Department of European Languages and Transcultural Studies (ELTS) in co-sponsorship with UCLA Center for European and Russian Studies (CERS), UCLA Department of Comparative Literature, and UCLA Alan D. Leve Center for Jewish Studies invite you to a book talk event on Tuesday, January 17, 2023 on De-integrate! by Max Czollek.
The event will take place in-person in Royce Hall 236. Please RSVP by Monday, January 9, 2023. Refreshments will be provided.
One of the most influential young voices of contemporary Germany, essayist, poet, and curator Max Czollek offers provocative commentary on being Jewish in postwar Germany. The bestselling author of the essay collections Desintegriert Euch! (De-Integrate Yourselves! 2018) and Gegenwartsbewältigung (Coming to Terms with the Present, 2020) argues against demands for integration while taking on antisemitism, racism, and xenophobia.
Part of a growing cohort of diverse voices speaking up about Germany's memory politics, identity troubles, and reluctant redefinition of Germanness, he offers sharp observations as well as creative alternatives to dominant notions of being German from a decidedly (East) German-Jewish perspective.
At UCLA, he will speak on the occasion of the publication of De-Integrate! A Jewish Surival Guide for the 21st Century (Restless Books, 2023), the English version of his much-discussed first volume, expertly translated by Jon Cho-Polizzi.
