This talk will provide the context and give some examples of how Lima Barreto (1881-1922) used his position as an Afro-Brazilian writer to engage with an unprecedented mass readership in Brazil in the first decades of the 20th century, and how he positioned himself against the elitist tendency in literature at the time, when many writers and intellectuals reacted against the incorporation of literature into mass society.

Felipe Botelho Correa is Assistant Professor of Brazilian, Portuguese and Lusophone African Studies at King's College London. He specializes in modern Brazilian culture with a focus on the interfaces between literature and journalism as well as the history of periodical print culture. He obtained his PhD at the University of Oxford.
