Required Courses:
East Asian Studies 191A: Globalization and China (4 units)
East Asian Studies 191B: 21st Century Beijing (4 units)
 
East Asian Studies 191A will examine the evolution of China from a poor, inward-looking nation into a globalized and formidable world power.  Through lectures, readings, documentaries, discussions, papers, and fieldtrips (e.g., Beijing Development Area, the 798 Art District, migrant enclaves, etc.), students will study the nature and perceptions of China’s rise and its economic and social implications for not only the nation but also the world.
 
East Asian Studies 191B  will explore how Beijing has transformed itself from an ancient capital into a modern, sleek, and arguably greener city. Through readings, lectures, guest lectures, documentaries, field trips (e.g., Beijing Planning Exhibition Hall, the Bird’s Nest, the Water Cube, the National Theater, etc.), presentations and papers, the course aims at helping students examine the history, cityscape, and branding of Beijing as well as the impacts of the 2008 Olympics.
