Lynda Bell

Associate Professor of History at the University of California, Riverside. Before joining UC Riverside, Professor Bell taught at the University of Illinois at Chicago for eight years. Her research interests and publications focus on the social and economic history of late nineteenth- and early twentieth-century China. Among her publications is One Industry, Two Chinas: Silk Filatures and Peasant-Family Production in Wuxi County, 1865-1937 (Stanford, 1999), a study of interrelationships between social/political events and modern silk industry development in Wuxi county, Jiangsu. She is also the co-editor of Negotiating Culture and Human Rights (Columbia, 2001), which provides a new interdisciplinary approach to issues of cultural values and universal human rights. Central to the discussion is the "Asian values debate." Professor Bell's plans for future research include a study of women, local courts, and family law in early twentieth-century China. Professor Bell was the director of the University of California Center in Beijing, China from 1999 to 2002.
