Associate Professor of Chinese, and head of the Asian Languages and Studies Program, at the University of Queensland. Professor Chen's research interests include functional syntax, discourse analysis, pragmatics, sociolinguistics, and historical linguistics. His current research projects are referentiality and definiteness in Chinese, and the information structure of sentences and discourse. Among his recent publications are Modern Chinese: History and Sociolinguistics (Cambridge, 1999); Language Planning and Language Policy: East Asian Perspectives (Curzon, 2001; co-authored); and "Language, Nationalism, Regional and Ethnic Identity in China," Language and Identity in Asia (Andew Simpson, ed.; Oxford, forthcoming).
